• Become sewer savvy! At the Infrastructure Information Center
Each year Onondaga County responds to hundreds of calls to homes that have had a sewer backup. Many of these nasty backups are caused by cooking grease poured down the kitchen sink drain or wipes flushed down the toilet. A single home backup can cost you hundreds, even thousands of dollars, and can be avoided by doing a few of very simple things.
First, never pour grease down the drain. Save it instead in a jar or can, and when the container is full and the grease is cooled, simply throw it in the trash. Second, wipe out your greasy pans before washing them, and throw the paper towels in the trash.
Third, never, never, never flush wipes (even the supposedly “flushable” ones).
It sounds very simple, and it is! Households are, by far, the largest contributor of grease to the sewer system. By doing these few simple things we can cut down on the number of terrible backups that happen to homeowners every year and help keep grease and other contaminants out of homes and the environment.
You will see demonstrations, examples and videos at the Infrastructure Information Center of how homeowners can help themselves and our community with this costly issue.
• OCCRA Extravaganza!
Living in Onondaga County means you have access to a premier solid waste management and resource recovery system. We are award winning!
What does that mumbo-jumbo mean? It means your community safely manages its trash, recycling, organics and hazardous wastes. Not every community can make that claim.
OCCRA will be at the Home & Garden Show to thank you for your participation in OCRRA's many programs and services, and showcase how we can continue with our award winning ways!
The OCRRA Booth will display OCRRA’s new composting process, highlight our quality compost and mulch products that are now part of the “Pride of New York” program and show case our efforts to further recycling and waste reduction efforts in our community and Central NY.
• Sneak Peak of the 2014 Prade of Homes
The 2014 Parade of Homes is moving to June! It will be held in the Town of Clay at the Farmstead and there will be twelve of the areas best builders participating. The Home & Garden Show will give you a sneak peek at the Parade, with displays by interior decorators, demonstrations and showcases from ‘Art on Parade’ and an overview of the charities the builders will be working with at the Parade.
Art on Parade is a unique opportunity for visitors to learn how art can enhance and personlize their homes. It is a partnership between businesses and artists, created by the non-profit American Rupite to incorporate original artwork into this year's featured houses in the Parade of Homes.
